Ever since I was young, I was fascinated by the beauty of this experience and wanted to recreate it through art. These paintings are the attempt to capture those fleeting moments. I’m aware of the vast expansive quality these feelings and have come to realize I might only hint at them, but in doing so, I hope to spark memories of that strange, mysterious time.
Using oil glazing and gold leaf technique, I intend to create a luminous and reflective light effect in my works. The choice of colors is a vital element for capturing the characteristic aura directly related to my emotional life. Emerging with the placement of forms and gesture, a contraction and expansion of the spatial movement is created. The virtual space on canvas recalls the fragments of my memories. The saturated imagery allows us to revisit the world between dreaming and reality. This journey evokes the co-existence between the afterimages and our myriad emotions.
Sauman Choy was born in Hong Kong in 1979 and began her artistic career at the age of five when she began sketching and practicing Chinese calligraphy with her father. She came to New York in 2001 and earned her BFA in printmaking at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She continued her studies of oil painting and mixed media at The Art Students League in New York City, where she studied with Bruce Dorfman, Frank O’Cain, Larry Poons, and Catherine Redmond. Currently, she live and works in Jersey City, NJ.
